St. Tammany Humane Society Thanks the Community for their Support
April 28, 2009

Covington, LA - The St. Tammany Humane Society finishes the national ZooToo.com shelter make-over contest in 6th place, winning $10,000 in improvements to the shelter. The community and supporters from across the nation came together to vote and try to put St. Tammany Humane Society back on top in the Million-Dollar Shelter Make-Over, but it just wasn’t enough to win the grand prize. However, the $10,000 has already gone to make much-needed improvements around the shelter, and as Executive Director Vaughn Maurice puts it, “While we didn’t win the million-dollar makeover we are still trying to improve the living conditions of our orphaned guests. We now have an opportunity for people to help just by doing normal internet searches. Please go to www.goodsearch.com and download the goodsearch toolbar. Every time you do an internet search we receive a penny. It may not sound like much but pennies do add up to dollars.” Dollars are exactly what they need to continue their life-saving efforts and find a home for every homeless pet in St. Tammany parish.

For more information on how you can help St. Tammany Humane Society and the orphaned companion animals of our community, please visit www.sthumane.org or email leslie@sthumane.org. Thank you in advance for your love and continued support..

St. Tammany Humane Society Needs Your Vote
April 15, 2009

New Orleans, LA - St. Tammany Humane Society is in 6th place for the ZooToo.com Million Dollar Shelter Make-Over and needs your vote to fetch the grand prize and bring a million-dollar, state-of-the-art animal shelter, veterinary clinic and learning facility home to St. Tammany Parish. Executive Director, Vaughn Maurice, explains, “The winner will be determined by the number of votes it receives between noon on Monday, April 13th and midnight April 19th. Each voter is allotted 10 votes per day for a total of 70 votes per person to be cast for your St. Tammany Humane Society. Status updates will be available on the web site April 15th and April 17th, with the winner being announced on USAToday.com and ZooToo.com on Monday, April 27th.

We each hold a piece of victory in our hands; a small key able to open the locks which keep us from:

  1. opening our doors to countless more homeless dogs and cats,
  2. updating our veterinary clinic, treating not only our shelter pets, but thousands of pets in the community,
  3. improving shelter conditions which present hazards to the animals in our care. A brand new million dollar shelter could solve all of the above-mentioned problems as well as the myriad others we are unable to mention.

Your votes will not only pave the road that leads to the reality of a million dollar Humane Society, but will also shine as proof of the unity of our community, the lights that illuminate St. Tammany as a leader and educator in animal welfare. The possibilities and implications of such an opportunity for those on “Dog Pound Road” are both endless and quite staggering. But, as much as we want this new shelter, we cannot do it on sheer willpower and desire alone. We need the help of our community and supporters to make our dream a reality – OUR reality!!”

So, you see, anyone with an email address can be a part of what is sure to be St. Tammany history and a million-dollar donation to the St. Tammany Humane Society and the companion animals it serves day in and day out. Besides just casting your vote at zootoo.com/americavotes/vote, you can get others involved by sending the link to friends and family and have them sign up and vote. St. Tammany Humane Society has also come up with a top secret strategy for ‘getting out the vote’ and getting more support. We don’t want to let the secret out, so for more information on the contest or how you can help, please email vaughn@sthumane.org.

Thank you for your support! We can do it together!

Woofstock Venue Change
March 27, 2009

Covington, LA - Although the weather held out for the outdoor festival, the Bogue Falaya river did not. The river has topped its banks and flooded the Park where Woofstock was to be held. As of 2:00 Friday afternoon, the river had not crested, and the weather is promising more rain in the forecast. As a result, St. Tammany Humane Society is forced to move the outdoor love fest, indoors—somewhat. In the name of peace, love and doggy poop, St. Peter School was gracious enough to open up their school to Woofstock 2009!

The festival will go on as scheduled, Sunday, March 29th with low-cost vet clinic operating from 9:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. and the festival from 11:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. However, the new location is St. Peter School just a few blocks away at 103 E. Temperance St in downtown Covington (off S. Theard St.).

Thank you for your assistance in passing this along to all who are expecting a wonderful Woofstock Sunday. The show will go on—just at the pavilion at St. Peters School now! You can still buy discounted tickets in advance at www.sthumane.org. See you at the Festival!

Giving Credit to the House Rabbit Society
March 10, 2009

Covington, LA- It’s Easter time again. Pet store windows are filled with adorable baby bunnies. Your kids are begging you to buy one. It’s so hard to resist. After all, you think, wouldn’t this be the perfect, low-maintenance “starter pet” for a young child? Think again! Every year, many thousands of rabbits are abandoned to shelters or released outdoors (a sure death sentence for a domestic rabbit) often because of misunderstandings on the part of the parents who bought them for their kids.

Rabbits are prey animals by nature. They are physically delicate and fragile, and require specialized veterinary care. Children are naturally energetic, exuberant, and loving. But “loving” to a small child usually means holding, cuddling, carrying an animal around in whatever grip their small hands can manage— precisely the kinds of things that make most rabbits feel insecure and frightened. Rabbits handled in this way will often start to scratch or bite simply out of fear. Many rabbits are accidentally dropped by small children, resulting in broken legs and backs. Those rabbits who survive the first few months quickly reach maturity. When they are no longer tiny and “cute,” kids often lose interest, and the rabbit, who has no voice to remind you he’s hungry or thirsty or needs his cage cleaned, is gradually neglected.

Parents, please help. If you’re thinking about adding a rabbit to your family think about this: pet rabbits have a lifespan of 7-10 years. Don’t buy on impulse. Wait ‘til after the holiday. Make an informed decision by learning about rabbit care first. Consider adopting a rabbit from your local shelter or rescue group. For the rabbit’s health and well-being (as well as for your child’s) make sure an adult will be the primary caretaker and will always supervise any children in the household who are interacting with the rabbit.

Domestic rabbits are inquisitive, intelligent, and very social by nature. A rabbit is a delightful companion animal as long as you remember: he’s not a child’s toy. He’s a real, live, 10-year commitment!

Neighbors Helping Furry Neighbors
January 15, 2009

Covington, LA - As Washington Humane Society (WHS) set about reorganizing its animal shelter near Bogalusa, a great dilemma remained: until a new shelter could be opened, where would all the animals go?

There were about 50 cats currently living at the sanctuary, which for many years had been operating at the home of Janet Applewhite, but their caretaker now suffers from health concerns that make her unable to continue the day-to-day care of all the kitties.

Luckily for these kitties, they found a friend in the Parish next door.  St Tammany Humane Society stepped up and agreed to accept a number of the cats into their adoption program.

“We want to thank our friends at St Tammany Humane Society for their swift and generous response in a time of great need for these animals,” commented WHS Board Member, Reggie Simmons.  “They are truly our heroes as they have literally saved the lives of these precious pets.”

Although the kitties are every age, color, and personality type, they have one trait in common: they like people and want to be someone’s pet!  They will be made available for adoption at St Tammany Humane Society (STHS) following check-ups by the veterinary staff to ensure they remain healthy and ready to go to their new homes.  St Tammany Humane Society invites everyone to come and meet these very special kitties.  For more information, please call STHS at 985-892-PETS (7387).

The remaining cats from the Washington Humane Society sanctuary will also be made available for adoption in Franklinton.  More information on these cats may be obtained by calling the Franklinton Veterinary Clinic at 985-839-3406.  Anyone wanting to adopt a pet can do so, regardless of what state or parish they live in.

Washington Humane Society is a 501(3)(2)(c) not-for-profit organization.  As part of their reorganization and renewed commitment to improve the lives of animals in Washington Parish, WHS plans to work with local agencies and authorities to staff a new animal care shelter and provide services for the entirety of Washington Parish. There is a great need for animal control in Washington Parish, and the WHS has resolved to assist the efforts of all levels of government in providing care and protection for the domesticated animals of Washington Parish.

Keep the Cats without the Kittens
January 12, 2009

Covington, LA- Feral Cat Fix Project

Many of us know that cats, especially strays, like to have their independence and don’t really like to be domesticated or approached by humans, but, without interference, these cats could go on to produce hundreds of litters and thousands of additional stray cats. These stray or feral cats are often found in our trash, abused by unwelcoming residents, or find their fate in traffic.

In an effort to control the feral cat population and give these cats the freedom and independence they desire, the St. Tammany Humane Society has developed a successful Feral Cat Fix Project, in which residents can catch and bring in feral cats for sterilization and then release them back into the wild.  In just 5 years, since the program began, the St. Tammany Humane Society has neutered more than 6,000 cats!

Although we recognize the importance of this program, it does not come without its costs. Many people realize the benefits, but don’t necessarily want to cover the costs of surgery for an animal that doesn’t belong to them. In response to this, the St. Tammany Humane Society offers a feral spay or neuter for only $25 and rely on contributions to the program to cover the remainder of the costs.

If you have a barn, trash, or burn piles, you probably have feral cats. Feral cats are great at controlling the rodent population, but can sometimes overpopulate themselves. If you would like to keep your feral cats, without the worry of adding to the problem, please trap and bring in the cats, and we will fix them.

For more information or to schedule your feral cats’ surgery, please call our Feral Cat Project Coordinator at 985-892-6442. The Feral Cat Fix Project, like all of our programs, relies solely on the contributions of friends and supporters like you. To give to the Feral Cat Fix Project, please mail your check to 20384 Harrison Ave. Covington, LA 70433 or donate securely online.

New Staff Veterinarian Means Great News for St. Tammany Parish
December 30, 2008

Covington, LA - Because our clinic services are so outstanding and typically cost significantly less than other area services it has been difficult to get an appointment at times. Well our own eminent Dr. Lisa Johnston has added to her staff to accommodate the demand for outstanding veterinary care. After a six month intensive national search she has engaged the services of the highly distinguished Dr. Randy Cox.

The St. Tammany Humane Society would like to introduce and welcome this new addition to our staff!  Dr. Randy Cox grew up in La Place, Louisiana and attended Nicholls State University for his pre-veterinary studies.  He graduated from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. After graduation, Dr. Randy practiced in Metairie before opening his own practice in Gretna.  Since Hurricane Katrina, he has been practicing in the Lake Charles area.  Earlier this year Dr. Randy moved back into the New Orleans and has been working part time at the St. Tammany Humane Society. Our clients and our staff loved working with Dr. Randy and we knew we wanted to keep him with us.  In December Dr. Randy accepted a full time position at the St. Tammany Humane Society. When Dr. Randy is not working, his two spoiled Chihuahuas Suzie and Izzie keep him busy.  We are thrilled to have Dr. Randy as part of our staff!

Remember when you use our top rated clinic you’re not only getting amazing savings but you’re helping the orphaned babies of the St. Tammany Humane Society. To make an appointment, please call (985)892-PETS (7387).

Adopt a Pet and Keep Your New Year’s Resolution
December 20, 2008

Covington, LA -Ahh – the fear of failing yet another New Year’s resolution looms menacingly before us at this time of year. Christmas parties, family get-togethers, all those Santas munching on milk and cookies – all result in the number one resolution for the New Year: losing that holiday (and pre-holiday) weight!! What if we at the St. Tammany Humane Society proposed the seemingly preposterous assertion that we could actually help you keep that fat burning resolution??!!! The Humane Society and weight loss? What gives?

According to a study recently released by the Northwestern Medical School in Chicago, people that make their pooch part of their weight loss team were able to markedly increase the amount of weight loss and keep it off. In simplest terms – pups help shed pounds permanently (Say that three times really fast)! “If you’re looking for motivation and social support to lose weight, you probably don’t have to look any further than the pet in your own home,” says Robert Kushner of Northwestern.

The St. Tammany Humane Society takes in over 1,000 animals a year; the not-so-coy insinuation being that, if you don’t already have a ready and waiting pooch at home, we have all the exercise buddies your little heavy heart could desire!! We are very excited to learn of this study, as it answers two problems we face daily. You can be healthy and happy with an adoption from the St. Tammany Humane Society!

Robert Kushner has done weight loss studies for more than 20 years and designed this one after Hill’s Pet Nutrition. The study proved that people and pets can help each other lose weight. Those included in this study lost an average of 5% of their body weight with one losing as much as 51 pounds simply by walking their dog for 20 minutes a day and limiting their calorie intake to 1400 calories a day (that’s right people – you have to put those cookies down while walking the pounds away with your four legged partner). Most felt that with their pups acting as panting, wagging, energetic motivators alongside them, the exercise was much less onerous and much more fun. As we all know from past experience, most plans to exercise faithfully usually taper off to nonexistence after a few weeks for many reasons. The main reason: It’s no fun to walk or jog alone – which is why we need to make it an enforced resolution in the first place (no one ever makes resolutions to take more naps or watch more TV). The enjoyment factor sets this plan apart from others simply because – walking with your dog is ENJOYABLE for both of you, and so you are more apt to continue this as a lifestyle change instead of a passing month long resolution.

If this useful information illuminates that tiny light bulb you carry around in your head, but you’ve just realized, sadly, that you are companionless.... fear not!!!! Our 100 exercise escorts are ready and waiting for you to begin your weight-loss and life-saving program. Happy New Year, and a Happy New You!!! Save a life and a bathroom scale today!!!

Give These Companions a Second Chance
December 2, 2008

Covington, LA -The St. Tammany Humane Society is reaching out to the community in an effort to give two pups a second chance at a full, healthy life. “Two of our shelter dogs have injuries to the knee that will require surgery.  The injury is a ruptured cruciate ligament, commonly referred to as an ACL injury.  This is the same injury that football players experience and which can take them out of the game for a season or longer. When the cruciate ligament is ruptured, the knee loses its stability and rotates in ways that it should not.  If the problem is left uncorrected, severe scarring and arthritis will occur that will cause a great deal of pain for the lifetime of the dog,” explains St. Tammany Humane Society kennel director, Kristen Oeller.

Like our beloved football players, these pups like to play hard and can continue to do so with your help. Surgery can be done to repair the damage and restore stability to the knee. However, the cost of this surgery can be $1,500 or more.

Sleepy, a 5-year old female boxer-mix, experienced this injury while frolicking in our play yard over the Thanksgiving holidays and playing with her favorite tennis ball.

Rover, a friendly 18-month old female lab-mix, experienced this injury some time ago.  She was brought into our facility mid-November after a Good Samaritan rescued her while wandering on Three Rivers Road. Both of these lovely ladies deserve a second chance at life, and you can give them that by donating to the Second Chance Fund at the St. Tammany Humane Society.

The St. Tammany Humane Society is working to fulfill its mission of saving every adoptable animal through the use of these and other programs. They need to raise over $3,000 to give these precious pups the surgery they need to live a life without pain. You can find out more about these and other programs on their web site at www.sthumane.org.

Please contribute to the care of these and other orphaned pets today. You may do so online at www.sthumane.org or by mail at 20384 Harrison Ave. Covington, LA 70433.

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Transport Program
November 25, 2008

Covington, LA -Not only can you offer your pet the benefits of a low-cost alteration, but you can send them on vacation to a beautiful new facility on the beach in Gulfport, MS. The St. Tammany Humane Society has partnered with the Humane Society of South Mississippi to offer our pets and their families low-cost spay/neuter surgeries. The HSSM offers low-cost spay/neuter through a program funded by the Humane Society of the United States and is proud to announce that they are having trouble filling their slots due to the success of this long-running program. They have extended the offer to transport pets from St. Tammany Parish to HSSM in Gulfport, MS December 4th to take advantage of the low-cost spay/neuter program in which your companions can be fixed for only $35; a typical spay/neuter surgery costs in excess of $60. Pets will be picked up from the St. Tammany Humane Society at the corner of Harrison Avene and 5th Street Thursday, December 4th at 8:30a.m. and transported to HSSM in Gulfport, MS, where they will be altered in a state-of-the-art clinic, recover in a first-class facility and safely returned home Friday, December 5th. This is a unique opportunity of which we really need to take advantage. There is a minimum requirement of 20 pets for transport, and if the transport program is successful, they will continue the program until the grant is exhausted. Not only does sterilization help to control the pet population, but can also add healthy years to your pet’s life. Studies show that alteration prevents certain types of cancers in pets and can give them healthier, longer lives. It can also help with behavior and temperament issues, because it reduces the animals desire to mark his territory and/or roam. For more information on the benefits of spaying and neutering your pets, please visit sthumane.org or call the Shelter at 985-892-PETS (7387).

In keeping with the theme, there were several photographers on hand to capture the event. In addition to our gracious volunteers, we had photographers from Sophisticated Woman and the Mandeville-Covington Picayune. We also had Tina Pazos of Tina Pazos Photography in Metairie capturing the fun of the evening. All of the photos will be posted at sttammanyhumanesociety.org for viewing, and for those interested in purchasing prints, you may do so at tinapazosphotography.com. There will be a link from the St. Tammany Humane Society web site as well.

October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month!
October 03, 2008

Covington, LA- October is Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month, and the St. Tammany Humane Society is celebrating! Each adopted animal comes fixed, with up-to-date vaccinations, 30-days of free pet insurance, a bag of food, microchip with national registration and the gift of giving an animal a second chance and a loving home. If that wasn’t enough, the Humane Society is also giving away $75 gift certificates for veterinary services good for the next year!

In an effort to reach our goal of adopting 75 dogs in the month of October, the St. Tammany Humane Society will host several offsite adoptions. They will be at PetSmart, the Covington Farmer’s Market and Hollywood Video in Covington every Saturday in October and through the end of the year.

Vote for Your Shelter to Win $1 Million Make-Over
September 26, 2008

zootoo.com

Covington, LA - Could you imagine being a philanthropist and having an extra $1,000,000.00 to make a donation?  A donation that would truly have a transformative effect on a nonprofit organization for generations to come.  Not many people have the ability to make such an amazing donation but guess what…now is your chance to truly be a part of donating a million dollars and it won’t cost you a penny - just a few minutes of your time.  As of Friday, September 26, 2008 the St. Tammany Humane Society is in 4th place in a national contest to win a one million dollar shelter makeover.  That’s one million dollars to benefit the orphaned animals of our community.  The St. Tammany Humane Society has a great chance of winning but we need your help.  All you need to do is go to www.zootoo.com/makeover and register as a supporter of The St. Tammany Humane Society (we are listed under zip code 70433) and we receive points.  After you register you can invite friends and family to help for more points, upload pictures of pets, play pet game and more.  Just about every activity you do earns points for our shelter to win a million dollar makeover.  You may never have another chance to have such a huge, amazing, long term, community impact.  So please go to ZooToo today and help us help the orphaned animals of St. Tammany Parish for generations to come!

The current facility is very outdated with little to no updating in its more than 50-year existence. It can barely house the more than 1,000 abused, neglected and abandoned animals it receives every year, not to mention that any amount of rainfall causes the back of the shelter to flood. The shelter animals and staff deserve so much more than this, so let’s show them that we care by taking a few seconds to vote and a few minutes to pass the link along to all our fellow animal lovers asking them to vote as well.

If you would like more information or to vote today, please visit www.zootoo.com/makeover or call the Humane Society at 985-892-PETS(7387).

Calling All Volunteers: Lend Me Your Ears
September 22, 2008

Covington, LA- The St. Tammany Humane Society is calling on its community to lend a helping hand. The St. Tammany Humane Society is the only non-profit animal welfare and sheltering organization serving St. Tammany parish and the more than 1,000 orphaned pets it receives each and every year. The shelter depends solely upon the support of the community to keep its operation running and to continue to save the lives of these companion animals. Realizing these difficult economic times, the shelter is reaching out for your support in other ways, specifically volunteerism.

Some people feel like they don’t have the time to commit to volunteering, but that’s the beauty of it, you’re the volunteer, so you say when you come in and when you go home; what you’re willing to do and what you won’t. You are the boss, and you get the ultimate reward: knowing that you have done good; you have made the difference in an orphaned pet’s life.

Now that the kids are back in school, many of us have as much as 8 hours a day freed up to do something that makes us feel good. Do you know what you can do in 8 hours?

·         You can clean an entire run of cages, making this temporary living situation feel a little more like home.

·         You can walk as many as 90 dogs, giving them the love, fresh air and exercise they need.

·         You can play with 65 cats giving them the socialization they need to be prepared for a permanent, loving home.

·         You can help clean up the administrative area and help get the office nice and organized to run more efficiently.

·         You can plant some trees, giving the animals a shaded area to play and relax while enjoying their time outside.

·         You could cut the grass, create a garden, paint the fence or do anything outside to spruce up the facade of the shelter making it more inviting for other prospective volunteers, donors or adopters.

There is so much that needs to be done at the shelter, and as a non-profit, they just don’t have all the resources to get it done. They need to focus on their core business, which is saving the lives of as many orphaned pets as possible, while improving the education and standard of living for all pets. That is why they must ask for your help.

There really is something for everyone at the shelter, and we hope that you will heed the call and see what you can offer to the orphaned pets of our community through your time and talents. For more information on volunteering or to apply, please call Leslie Durio, volunteer coordinator, at the St. Tammany Humane Society at 985-892-PETS(7387).

St. Tammany Humane Society Receives Tremendous Support and Overwhelming Success
September 09, 2008

Covington, LA- The St. Tammany Humane Society is extremely pleased by the overwhelming response received at the onset of Hurricane Gustav to a request for emergency foster homes. With 153 animals fostered out just days before Gustav was scheduled to come inland, the response to our call for help was remarkable, and it was refreshing to see the love of animals exhibited by our community.

The St. Tammany Humane Society wants to thank the community for stepping up at such a crucial time to help protect and care for the homeless pets. We know that fostering animals can be difficult, especially during times of uneasiness and uncertainty, and we appreciate the support that we received in getting our orphaned pets to safety.

Not only did people foster these animals at home through the storm, but also evacuated with them to places as far as Memphis, TN. Of the 153 pets fostered, 35 of them found permanent, loving homes! Executive Director, Vaughn Maurice explains, “Most of our foster parents had shared the same comments – they were pleasantly surprised that they were so well behaved and if they didn’t already have so many pets they would adopt them all. It’s true that most abandoned animals are not abandoned because of problems or behavior issues, but, sadly, because they have become inconvenient! Fostering out so many animals in such a short time was a bit chaotic so in preparing for next time we are asking for animal lovers to get on our emergency foster list now. You will be pleasantly surprised.”

Board President, Gary Thomas, CPA notes, “Although there were a few logistical problems encountered with fostering so many animals in such a short time, the employees and volunteers at the Shelter and the community foster parents made the process extremely successful overall.”

For more information on how you can help the orphaned pets of our community through fostering or other means, please call the St. Tammany Humane Society at 985-892-7387(PETS).

Emergency Foster Homes Needed
August 27, 2008

Covington, LA- The St. Tammany Humane Society is in need of emergency foster homes in preparation for the approaching storm. They have 92 dogs and 60 cats in house and do not have enough vehicles or volunteers to transport them to safety. This facility is predisposed to flooding and can take in water during a heavy thunderstorm, so the threat of a hurricane brings the threat of real damage and danger. They are asking that the community temporarily foster the animals beginning this Thursday and bring them back next Wednesday after the storm has passed. The shelter is also interested in any transport programs available. The shelter will not accept anymore animals beginning today, and the Department of Animal Services has already closed due to hurricane preparedness.

Please open your hearts and your homes to these orphaned pets for a few days to ensure their safety and survival. If you can help an orphaned pet weather the storm in the comfort of your home, please contact the shelter at 985-892-PETS(7387). The pets and people of the St. Tammany Humane Society are depending on you. Please show them you care.

Today Is a Great Day for the Orphaned Pets of St. Tammany Parish
August 26, 2008

Today, Louisiana State House Representative, Tim Burns presented the St. Tammany Humane Society with a check for $25,000 to help fund the shelter and care of the abandoned, neglected and abused pets of our community. As a self-proclaimed animal lover and owner of a dog and several cats-and some uninvited raccoons, Representative Burns was happy to see the money appropriated for such a worthy cause.

This money is not only a necessity, but a huge step in the right direction for animal welfare. Executive Director, Vaughn Maurice explains, “$25,000 will go a long way in the general care of our shelter animals in helping pay for food, medicine, and spaying or neutering. We helped nearly 700 homeless dogs and cats last year and have increased our dog spaces from 72 to 98 and cat spaces from 30 to 60. This increase has put a major strain on our operating budget as we are currently running at an $85,000 deficit.”

The St. Tammany Humane Society is the only non-governmental, non-profit animal welfareorganization in the community that offers shelter, veterinary care, fostering and adoption services for the unwanted, neglected, abandoned and abused pets of St. Tammany Parish.
They also have several programs in place to educate the community and enrich the lives of pets everywhere. As a 501(c)3 organization, the Shelter relies heavily on the support of its community to fund its programs and services, which directly and profoundly benefit the orphaned pets of our community, giving them a new leash on life.

When asked what his goals were, Executive Director Maurice claims, “The main goal for the companion animals we take in is to find them a loving home as quickly as possible. Our ultimate goal is to one day see every adoptable animal in St. Tammany Parish have a home!” President of the Board, Gary Thomas, CPA notes, "The St. Tammany Humane Society is working to import and implement a model that can provide living alternatives for sheltered animals in St. Tammany Parish. All companion animals have a fundamental and basic right to live, and while achieving a no kill community will take time, effort, and resources, it is within our reach."

We would also like to thank Pam & Yvonne for agreeing to give their time on the fundraising committee today! It is because of generous people like you that we can keep saving lives! For more information on how you can help St. Tammany Humane Society achieve these goals, please call the Shelter at 985-892-PETS(7387).

St. Tammany Humane Society Needs an RV for Transport
August 11, 2008

RV or Not-Here We Come

Covington, LA-The St. Tammany Humane Society is looking for an RV (recreational vehicle) to use as a vehicle of hope for the orphaned pets of our community. There are several people that feel, after living in a FEMA trailer for 2 years, they could not spend another second in an RV or travel trailer, so we are hoping that these people may donate their used RV’s or travel trailers to the St. Tammany Humane Society to use for offsite adoptions; spay/neuter or medical transport; transport to other areas for adoption or for hurricane evacuation. A vehicle this size would allow us to transport several animals at a time, saving us gas, money, time and most importantly, lives.

If you or someone you know has an RV or travel trailer that they could donate, please contact Vaughn Maurice at the St. Tammany Humane Society at 985-892-7837 or via email at vaughn@sttammanyhumanesociety.org.

A Second Chance for Diana - A Second Chance for St. Tammany Humane Society
June 12, 2008

Covington-Little did the Good Samaritan  know, but when he picked up this poor scrappy little black dog and brought it to the St. Tammany Humane Society, not only was he about to change this dog’s life forever, but he was about to change the way things are done around the shelter as well.  See, he brought the stray companion animal to the St. Tammany Humane Society because he did not want to take it to the Department of Animal Services, where euthanasia is always a sad but real possibility. He wanted to give this pet a second chance.

Diana 13.JPGDiana, as this poster-dog has been named by the shelter, was evaluated upon entering the St. Tammany Humane Society. Initially, it was believed that Diana had serious and expensive medical issues, including a serious skin condition, and would not be a good adoption candidate.  As such, she would be transported to Animal Services to make room for the hundreds of other more adoptable homeless pets that were readily available.

After much deliberation, the board and staff at the St. Tammany Humane Society realized that Diana had started a revolution at the shelter and that they were going to do whatever it took to give Diana and other companion animals like her a second chance at life from this point forward.  As it turned out, Diana did not test positive for any significant illnesses, but did have a serious, but treatable, case of canine mange.

Atypical of most shelters, the St. Tammany Humane Society has decided to set up a fund, the Second Chance Fund, for companion animals like Diana, so some treatable illness doesn’t necessarily mean death for the homeless pets of our community. This Fund will pay for the treatment necessary to cure Diana of mange and for the care she will receive until she is ready for adoption.

To help treat Diana and give other companion animals like her a second chance at life and finding a permanent, loving home, please donate to the Second Chance Fund today. The St. Tammany Humane Society is the only non-profit organization in St. Tammany Parish to care for the thousands of homeless pets in our community, and they rely solely on the support of the community it serves.

St. Tammany Humane Society Wags Its Tail at New Leadership
June 10, 2008

Covington-The St. Tammany Humane Society is pleased to announce that they have a new leader at the helm of their efforts as well as an ad agency and new board member to boot. As of Wednesday, May 29, Vaughn Maurice, MHA, former COO for the American Red Cross in West Palm Beach, FL, will take the St. Tammany Humane Society in a new direction as their Executive Director. “It is our desire to be a national leader and respected resource in animal welfare and protection procedures. We want to be the best at saving lives and finding permanent homes and will strive to make a difference for our companion animals, for our community and for companion animals around the country,” says St. Tammany Humane Society board president, Gary Thomas, CPA.

In addition to the exciting move into the executive director’s position, the St. Tammany Humane Society has engaged public relations firm Ad2, Inc. to increase awareness surrounding the issues of animal welfare and its efforts to build a model humane society and shelter that the community will get behind and support whole-heartedly.

Allen Marks of New Orleans’ paper company, Marks Paper, has also agreed to heed the call and join the  board and has hit the ground running. While living in New Orleans, Allen was on the board of the Louisiana SPCA, where he served as President, Vice President and Fundraising Chair. Allen, now retired and living in St. Tammany Parish, has a desire to commit his time and energy to helping the homeless animals in this community. At his first board meeting, he was not only approved by the board as a member, but he also volunteered for several jobs and has decided to offer his experience and expertise as part of the fundraising committee.

The St. Tammany Humane Society is fortunate to have these people on their team and know that they will help realize the ultimate goal-to give all homeless pets a second chance at life. We’ve all received a second chance-or two-don’t those surrendered to our care deserve one too?

The St. Tammany Humane Society is always looking for help from the community in the areas of volunteerism, donors and board members. If you are interested in becoming involved with the efforts of the St. Tammany Humane Society, please contact Executive Director, Vaughn Maurice, at 985-892-7387 x107.

St. Tammany Humane Society is the primary non-profit organization in St. Tammany Parish to shelter, care for and find permanent loving homes for the homeless companion animals in our community. The funding for its efforts is derived solely through tax-deductible donations and community support.
